Job description

The Department of Human Movement Sciences Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in collaboration with Reade, Centre for Rehabilitation and Rheumatology, is offering a three-year PhD studentship focused on the cost-effectiveness and user-friendliness of an electrical stimulation method to improve pressure ulcer (decubitus) risk factors: interface pressure distribution, local circulation, and muscle size and to markedly reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers in individuals with spinal cord injury. A prospective multicenter (all rehabilitation centers in the Netherlands with a specialized spinal cord injury unit) RCT design will be used with an economic and process evaluation alongside. The experimental group will receive electrical stimulation of the gluteal and hamstring muscles for one year next to the usual care, while the control group will receive only usual care. The studentship is funded by a grant provided by ZonMW. Applicants are expected to have experience and/or affinity with clinical studies.

Requirements
  • a completed MSc degree in the field of Human Movement Science, or related areas
  • expertise in electrical stimulation is a pre
  • experience in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal measuring techniques is a pre
  • experience in clinical research or a clinical professional background is a pre
  • experience in cost-effectiveness evaluations is a pre
  • good writing skills
  • good command of the Dutch Language (mandatory)
  • good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • a driving license
An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. PhD students are also expected to assist in teaching undergraduates.

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts €2,709 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to €2,972 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a duration of 3 years.
